Blogger is Having 'Interesting' Times

I have been having an interesting time with Blogger! Yesterday I realized that one of my favourite blogs to follow had suddenly 50 posts running down my Blog Roll! When I clicked on the first one it I was 'hijacked' and taken to a pornographic site. When I tried to go to the site by typing in the URL in my browser, the same thing happened! I have e-mailed the blogger whose site it is and warned him, but as of now the problem persists. I have also informed Blogger. Apparently, there is a problem with some sites being hijacked in just this way. I wish they would explain how to avoid this happening -- but I suspect they haven't figured that out yet.

Anyway, in order to get rid of the 50 posts clogging up my Blog Roll I have had to stop following this blog -- it took me a while to figure out how -- as initially I could not find his blog listed on my Blog List nor when I went to 'Manage Your Blogs'! Persistence paid off, however and it finally showed up and I was able to proceed. One thing I am pleased about is that Google picked up what was happening and warned me. In fairness to the blogger, I will be checking back regularly to make sure when I can follow him again as it is one of my favourites...

Then this morning I noticed that my profile picture had disappeared from all the blogs I follow! It used to be that if you wanted to 'follow' you just clicked 'follow this blog' and then agreed that's what you wanted. Now a new button has popped up saying, 'Join this Site' and you have to choose an account to sign into -- such as
Google. Sign in, then it says you have joined and then you must  click on the box that says  'Done'. I must thank Perpetua for the heads up on this, by the way...

  • Now in order to have your profile picture come up you have to Join This Site all over again.
  • When you've gone through the necessary steps you will see a blanked out picture at the top of the followers and next to it the word 'Options'. Click on 'Options' and then choose 'Site settings'.
  •  Another box comes up and you will see a box with a blank picture space and a choice of what to do, for example you can upload a photo from your computer. Immediately underneath the box is a choice to use a picture from a profile you already have on the web. Click on it!
  •  And a whole bunch of choices are there for you, including 'Blogger'. Click on your choice, yet another box comes up -- I think an 'OK' is required.
  • Then when that box goes look at the bottom of the remaining box and click the 'Done'. When you have 'done' that  magically your picture appears!
I still have not figured out how to avoid having to go to each blog that I follow and go through this process. Does anyone out there know the answer?

  1. Sorry I'm afraid I can't help you with that one. I've just always joined a site using 'join this site' using google connect.
So far I've not been struck by too many Blogger gremlins [keeping fingers crossed] Antoinette

    1. I'm not sure what is going on! Originally I 'followed', then I had to 'Join' and the picture would automatically come up. Then this morning I noticed that my picture was missing on all the blogs I follow, so I have been going through the laborious task of finding a fix ... :-(

  2. Broad, I saw that he was having problems by a post in the Blogger Help forum yesterday when I was checking on something else. Sadly no-one is completely safe from hackers and spammers. :-(

If it's any help your profile picture is showing large as life in my list of followers, so perhaps when you went through that procedure it sorted out the problem for all the blogs you follow.

    2. LOL, Broad! In that case I'm afraid I can't help. The ways of Blogger are sometimes so inscrutable that I keep toying with the possibility of changing to WordPress

  4. My pix is on your blog Broad, but on mine you are a blank without even a name (I'm assuming the blank face is you since the number of people on my 'followers' list is still the same. So if I'm on yours but you're only halfway there on mine...what's the solution? Can I send whoever stuffed this up a big raspberry?

  5. Dear Broad,
I copied and ran off the steps you gave today, thank you. My problem is that every time I try to join a blog as a follower, a blank picture appears all by myself above all the other small icons. I don't know why that happens. Do you? It's that way on your blog and on almost every one I've selected to follow.

Any suggestions for how to change that and also for what to do when I join a new blog?????

    Peace.

  7. I'm illiterate when it comes to the techie stuff so if this all happens to me, I'll be gone. I hate change. Thankfully so far I've had none of the above happen. I check in thru google acct to and it seems to be reliable. I'm not bragging for sure or it will start acting ugly.
    Blessings, B
Hope you have it all fixed.

    1. Well I hope you can continue without mishap -- however, I'm sure you can manage the techie stuff just fine -- it's a pain, but quite manageable!

  8. G'day Broad. Don't you just hate it when something like this happens? I hope you manage to sort it out ok. Your picture is still coming up on my page. I have not had any trouble with Blogger since sorting out the mess with my new email address when we moved house and I jolly well hope it stays that way. Take care. Liz...

  9. Hello:
There always seems to be some problem or another with Blogger. We have been through some problems with following but, thankfully, they now seem to have been fixed. However, the latest trick seems to be that once the comments reach 200, no others are visible. One can place further comments but they are not immediately visible when one enters the site How this ha come about, we have no idea. Perhaps all of thisis jst designed to keep us all on our toes?!!!

    1. Yesterday I read something on Blogger about the number of comments being limited -- but I can't now find it for you ;-(. I hesitate to complain too loudly about blogger -- it's a free service and has enriched my retiring life immensely!

  10. I have no solution for your problem but perhaps you have one for mine:

The new blogger dashboard no longer has 'manage blogs you're following' Were do I go to unfollow? temporarily or permanently?

A lot of blogs have suddenly seemingly closed their doors. Not true, it's blogger up to his tricks. things are pretty hectic since the new dashboard style came in.

    1. One solution is to go back to the old interface! I tried the new one and changed back!

The other solution is go to the blog you want to stop following. Go to the little pictures of followers and you should see your picture and name at the top. Next to the picture of you is the word 'options', which you should click on ... a box pops up with some details about you and if you look about half-way down on the right hand side is a link which says 'stop following this blog.'

  11. I am no good at finding solutions with blogger. I don’t touch too many buttons as I am afraid something bad will happen, but so far have had no problems with follow that blog.
