Well, the election is over, my visit to the States is over and now life gets back to its more or less ordinariness.
Since my political leanings are more to the left of Centre, I am not exactly thrilled with the outcome -- but satisfied at least the we have one of only 8 Liberal Democrat MPs. I am now in the midst of filling out my citizenship application so that next time, God willing, I shall be allowed to cast my ballot and not feel 'left out' of the proceedings!
I sincerely hope that by the time of the next election the UK will still be a member of the European Union -- that will be the next big fight. And the Conservatives will probably be doing most of it amongst themselves! Apparently, One of the first bills to be put through by the new Government will be the Abolition of the Human Rights Act. Sounds ominous to me -- doesn't quite have the same 'ring' to it as say the Abolition of Slavery...
It is good to be home, though it would be nice to suffer from a bit more warmth in the air. The winds are up, but the sun is out. The cherry blossom lasted all of two days -- one of which was all but lost on me due to jet-lag. And speaking of the 'lagged-jet'!
Our arrival back to Britain was delayed by 10 hours, which means that we are each receiving compensation from the airline to the tune of 600 Euros! The Man remembered reading that EU passengers have the right to compensation for delays over 4 hours and so he duly wrote to the airline and was rewarded with a prompt and positive reply.
Glad to hear you are back safely on Terra Firma - my friends in The Lakes are delighted that Tim Fallon, another Lib MP has also got in again. We have to take what is voted in whether we like it or not sadly.
ReplyDeleteYes, there is always next time -- or maybe it will be the time after that!
DeleteIt's odd to me that almost all of my UK blogging friends are of the same mind about the election. I wonder just who it was that voted in the Conservatives? That was a nice little compensation package you got from the airline! We don't have anything of the sort. :-)
ReplyDeleteThere are indeed benefits to living in the EU!
DeleteThe platitudes about home sweet home being the best are true. If only the weather would cooperate.
ReplyDeleteThe thing about UK weather is that if we had warm weather now for a few days, that would be it for summer! At least that's the way it seems!
DeleteI've been delayed ten hours and gotten nothing for the inconvenience. Glad you're home safe.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Stephen. I must say, I am surprised that we are getting so much and so quickly -- the airline contacted us almost immediately and payment should be received within 21 days!

ReplyDeleteAh, it's good to be awarded something for all that trouble! Ten hours at 600 is just 300 for each of you, or 30per hour. Not bad. What are the disadvantages for England for dropping out of the EU?
That is 600 for each of us, Rosaria! As for the disadvantages for the UK dropping out of the EU -- I think that sounds like a good idea for a post!
DeleteI feel the way I felt in 1992! At least you are happy with your MP...think of us being stuck with Bill Cash for our MP. Fat chance of him representing the pro European views of this particular constituent!
ReplyDeleteGlad you are home safe and sound and very good news about the compensation. ;0)
At the moment it feels as if the UK is in limbo -- I expect perhaps the referendum will come sooner rather than later ... Hard to say what will happen. Compensation is already in our bank account! How about that!?
DeleteGlad you're safely home, if a little chilly. You sound as despondent about the election result as I am. We lost our Lib Dem MP in 2010 and his Conservative successor has just increased his majority. :( Your prompt and generous compensation for that awful delay must feel like a real ray of sunshine.
